6 questions telling me What You Really Think!
An outline of what I actually did over the 4 week period …
Days 1-7: Juice only
Over this period I juiced predominantly a CABALA juice – Carrots, Apple (yellow), Beetroot, Apple (green), Lemon and Apple (red). I’m not sure if my apples were yellow or just light greeny/yellow, but I did my best to get this combination.
I didn’t get any come down effects such as headaches or cravings for food and I put that down to the fact that I have completed a couple of short fasts (of 3-5 days) in the past and also realise that our bodies are extremely clever and the mind is even more powerful at directing our behaviour if we allow it to be. I have to admit though, that writing the blog made it easier for me to be committed as I knew I’d have to tell you all!
Days 8-14: Water only
Over this period, I drank 1-3 litres of water per day and sometimes made a pot of herbal tea to enjoy at my desk. One time I added a teaspoon of honey to the cup and another time I added maple syrup to see if I felt any different but didn’t note anything particular. Initially I continued to use my juicer to try new recipes such as hummus, babaganoush (egg plant dip) and bliss balls (mixture of nuts, dates, goji berries and rolled in coconut, sesame seeds and puffed brown rice) which I’d serve to friends and also put the tiniest bit in my mouth where I’d chew it and then spit it out so I could taste the creations.
Days 15-20: Water only

During this stage I had noticed that my weight was on a smooth descent and on day 19 I realised a 10kg drop in body weight. I didn’t start this fast for that reason and seeing such a large weight loss (I went from 72.8kg to 62.7kg) I decided to finish day 20 and go on to juices. Once I’d made that decision, there was a sense of relief that I was going to be tasting, creating and cooking again. Apparently as humans, we make decisions for emotional reasons and justify with logic, and I would say that I was looking for a reason to stop the fast as I was SOOOO incredibly bored not being able to CREATE. I also noticed this from day 6 during the 10 day silent meditation retreat I went to last year in northern New South Wales, on a rock-lined headland by the sea. During that experience, I found little discomfort with sitting for hours at a time without even moving in some sittings; the food was delicious, plentiful and vegetarian; the rooms were simple and the facilities quite ample, but the BOREDEM I suffered from day 6-9 was excruciating. I could not help a soul, I could not smile at anyone (no eye contact), I could not draw, write or make something with my hands. All I could do was work out ways I was going to value every moment of my life as time was drifting away. There are so many creations to make, people to inspire, experiences to bathe in, fun to be had and life to live.
Once you identify a pattern you do,
You no longer have any excuses.
Are you at Cause or Effect of your life?
I have a belief that once we identify a pattern in something we do, we no longer have the excuse not to deal with it. This doesn’t mean anything has to change, it simply means that we have to take responsibility for the pattern and decide if anything can be learned or changed if required. I’ve always been aware that Creating was not just a Like or Want of mine, it’s a Core Need – it’s the way I grow. If I don’t feel as if I’m creating at some level, I really start to feel my purpose being challenged. So I think it was the boredom, not the loss of weight which really got to me.
Note: On the topic of time, before delivering a Time Management Course the other day, I read some of my favourite authors’ perspective on Time and found the article below entitled Can you live on 24 hours per day? I think it holds a brilliant realisation.
Can you live on 24 hours per day?
Philosophers have explained space…
… they have not explained TIME.
It is the inexplicable raw material of everything. With it, all is possible, without it, nothing. The supply of time is truly a daily miracle, an affair genuinely astonishing when one examines it. You wake up in the morning, and lo! your purse is magically filled with twenty-four hours of the unmanufactured tissue of the universe of your life! It is yours. It is the most precious of possessions. A highly singular commodity, showered upon you in a manner as singular as the commodity itself!
For Remark! No one can take it from you. It is unstealable. An no one receives either more or less than you receive.
Talk about an ideal democracy! In the realm of time there is no aristocracy of intellect. Genius is never rewarded by even one extra hour a day. And there is no punishment. Waste your infinitely precious commodity as much as you will, and the supply will never be withheld from you. No mysterious power will say: “This man is a fool, if not a knave. He does not deserve time; he shall be cut off at the meter.” It is more certain than bonds, and payment of income is not affected by Sundays.
Moreover, you cannot draw on the future.
Impossible to get into debt!
You can only waste the passing moment. You cannot waste tomorrow; it is kept for you. You cannot waste the next hour; it is kept for you.
(The text continues a bit more and then finishes with …)
… Which of us has been saying to himself all his life: “I shall alter that when I have a little more time?
We never shall have any more time. We have, and we have always had, all the time there is.

Days 21-28: Juice then light vegetables then chocolate … then alcohol
Once I started eating again, I was very excited to be able to have whatever I wanted. It was interesting watching my relationship with food change and then change again. From being in a place where I didn’t even consider eating days before, I quickly started longing for food. I started with juices and a lovely vegetable soup with barley and other old grains, but within a day, I was looking in the cupboards for nuts, snacks, random chocolates, and other naughty things. I think I was feeling a reaction to the the effect of sacrificing my choice to eat, and as a result, I wanted to eat … and then eat some more. It didn’t leave me with a good feeling as I felt a slave to the delights I could find or create. Don’t get me wrong, I did eat some chocolates and even ice-cream, but I have been generally still eating lots of fruits, pulses, nuts and vegetables but certainly more than I need. I believe I’m just at the end of that feeling and can see that having a routine is what’s helping me.
Also, last night I went out to poker and afterwards had a few drinks at a local bar. There was a special on some shots and I ended up having two of them with the people I was with. Add this together with the beers I had, and then get me to ride through the city on my bicycle and that spells a recipe for disaster. Suffice it to say I did not feel particularly healthy and bright when I arrived home.
Weights & Measures over 28 days
These charts show the progression over the 28 days. The dotted red line is a trend line of a moving average. It looks as if I’m balancing out again.

The stark contrasts in measurements I experienced after I began eating again may illustrate whether my body was full or empty. This gives an indication as to how much food we hold in our stomachs and colons naturally.
I’m going to keep measuring for a while longer and am starting with my personal trainer tomorrow – this should affect things again and I’ll be interested to see the results.
What has changed for you? Please complete my 6 question survey.
I have put together a short 6 question survey which I’d really appreciate your opinions on. It should take about 4 mins to complete and if you add your email address, I’ll keep you updated on future challenges and ideas you may be interested in. Click here for the survey.
A few random observations I have had
- It is strange hearing people tell you you’ve lost weight when you have just put on 3.5kg
- Be aware that the pendulum swings in more than two ways. If you don’t take the lesson and move the clock, you can end up back where you started, but with new habits.
- I drank less water when I moved off the juices/water fast and as a result it was a lot harder going to the toilet than previously. It’s just getting back to normal now.
That’s it from me right now as it’s getting late again. I will update with details of my weight in a week or so and if you have added your email in the survey, I’ll let you know when I have done so.
Remember, without health, nothing is possible – take a tiny step every day, and watch the difference unfold.
Quote of Every day
One of my favourite quotes from one of my favourite authors
Live this day as if it will be your last. Remember that you will only find ‘tomorrow’ on the calendars of fools.
Forget yesterday’s defeats and ignore the problems of tomorrow.
This is it. Doomsday. All you have. Make it the best day of your year. The saddest words you can ever utter are, ”If I had my life to live over again. ”Take the baton, now. Run with it! This is your day!
Beginning today, treat everyone you meet, friend or foe, loved one or stranger, as if they were going to be dead at midnight. Extend to each person, no matter how trivial the contact, all the care and kindness and understanding and love that you can muster, and do it with no thought of any reward.
Your life will never be the same again.”

Quinoa, Buckwheat, Barley and other old grains
I was like a child in a candy store this morning at the markets and bought heaps of fruit and vegetables – I mean HEAPS! This included oranges, lemons, limes, apples, 6kg carrots, a 9kg watermelon, beetroots, kale, 2 bags of guavas and a handful of other delicious items. I can’t wait to get juicing tomorrow and watermelon is on the top of my list. FYI, an organic watermelon that size only cost $18 which I thought was very reasonable. Back to my friend Don Tolman, he apparently fasted for 90 days on watermelon and watermelon juice alone!

Off to bed now as I walked around the markets for about 3 hours as well as had a huge walk along the beach on Sunshine Beach.

And another fact about food. At one university in the US, they took a single tomato and took all the seeds out of it and planted them. After either two or three harvests of those tomatoes and doing the same thing, they were able to produce enough tomatoes to feed 200,000 people tomatoes three times per day … FOR EVER. Ok, not such an exciting diet, but when you think about it that way, there really shouldn’t be a food shortage anywhere.

It may shock some of you, and I do realise that there are potentially disease implications, however I no longer react to mosquitoes biting me. They used to be the bane of my life when out in the bush or rainforests and I had a rule that if they were on my turf I could kill them, but if I was on their turf, then I could only brush them away (I’ve since extended their turf over mine but minimise their presence with incense and closing shutters.) What I’ve found is that by not reacting to them, my body reacts accordingly and seldom do I come up in red itchy welts.
Be careful asking the question Why? If someone has done something they shouldn’t have and you want them to realise the implications of what they’ve done, asking Why? will get them to explain reasons which support their action. A better question which inherently creates ownership of our actions could be something like: Why did you choose to do that? followed swiftly by, What do you want instead? This gets people to focus on solutions instead of problems. (By the way, for fun try this with the cat photo and notice the difference in the way you and the cat would feel.)
